Wedding ceremony and first dance music: how to choose.

The ceremony and the first dance are the two moments everyone remembers. Here is how to choose music that is really yours.

Updated October 2026

Start from a feeling, not a title

Before looking at lists, say in one sentence what you want people to feel: calm, tenderness, joy, emotion. The right song usually follows from that sentence, and it is rarely the one at the top of every list.

The ceremony: let it breathe

For the entrance and the signing, instrumental music often works better than songs, because words compete with the vows. I play piano as well as DJ, so a quiet, atmospheric arrival is something I can discuss with you.

The first dance: length and edits

A full song can feel very long when all eyes are on you. Many couples shorten the track, or start slowly and let guests join after a minute or two. Tell your DJ what you prefer so the transition is smooth.

Choose something that tells your story

A song from a first trip, a film you saw together, a melody that was played at your home. A personal choice is remembered more than a famous one, and it avoids the song three other weddings used this month.

Tell your DJ in advance

Give the song, the version you want and the moment you want it to start. Ask your DJ to test the sound on the dance floor beforehand, so nothing surprises you on the day.

Questions

How long should the first dance be?

There is no rule. Many couples keep one to two minutes alone, then invite their guests onto the floor. Tell your DJ what you prefer.

Can you play live piano at the ceremony?

I play piano and DJ. Tell me about your ceremony and we will see together what is possible and what suits the place.

Can we use a song that is not famous?

Yes, and it is often the better choice. Send me the version you like and we will check how it sounds on the day.

Do you help us choose?

Yes. During our video call we talk about you and your night, and I record a free demo set before you decide.
